A Warm Thank You!

February 4th, 2010

The conference organisers (Katharine, Kim, Jane, Hana and Gemma) would like to thank everyone who attended the University of Liverpool’s Crossing the Line symposium for contributing to such a successful postgraduate event. It is with great pleasure that we were joined by delegates and speakers from across the globe including the USA, Sweden, Spain, Ireland, Poland and many UK HE institutions such as the Universities of Oxford, Exeter, Nottingham, Birmingham and Portsmouth. Over the two-day period we enjoyed the opportunity to network, gain insightful information about life as an early career researcher and showcase cutting edge research conducted in the Victorian-Modern field. The conference attendees made all of this possible, for which the organisers are extremely grateful.

We would also like to give our special thanks to Mr Matthew Frost (Manchester University Press), Professor Regenia Gagnier (University of Exeter) and Dr Mark Llewellyn (University of Liverpool) for providing invaluable keynote and plenary lectures; Miss Catherine Rees, Mrs Barbara Smith and Dr Chris Williams for their continued administrative and technical support throughout the past twelve months; JE Graphics for kindly creating this website and Mr Stuart Keates for producing the beautiful promotional materials.

The AHRC funded Victorian Network journal will run a special ‘Crossing the Line’ issue to publish a selection of the conference proceedings. Information about publication opportunities in conjunction with the conference will be distributed to all postgraduate speakers in due course. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries.

With best wishes,
The Conference Organisers

The Red Dress

June 18th, 2009

Hi there,

This is a short blog to show some of my inspirations for joining the ‘Crossing the Line’ team.

These pictures show how two dedicated Modernists, the painter Vanessa Bell and the writer Virginia Woolf, responded to their Victorian heritage - specifically to affinities towards their mother and their great aunt, the photograher Julia Margaret Cameron.

The first picture shows their mother, Julia Jackson Duckworth, photographed by their great aunt. Woolf included this picture in the album of Cameron’s photographs that she published with Roger Fry in 1926 Victorian Photographs of Famous Men and Fair Women.

In the same year, Woolf posed for the Vogue magazine ‘Hall of Fame’ wearing her mother’s dress and replicating her pose in Cameron’s photograph.

The third picture, painted in 1929, shows Bell’s re-working of Cameron’s black and white photograph of her mother into a full colour portrait.

For me, Bell and Woolf’s re-workings of their aunt’s photography and their mother’s image clearly indicate intriguing cross-currents between Victorian and Modernist cultures which I hope this conference will provide a forum to explore.

All the best,

Hana.
